Missing Indian in UK found dead, cops suspect suicide

LONDON: Gurdeep Hayer, the missing 20-year-old Indian origin student from Birmingham, was found dead in Manchester late on Monday. While the police suspect he may have committed suicide, this will be officially determined by a coroner's inquiry. Hayer's is the second case of death of a student of Indian descent within a fortnight in Manchester. On Boxing Day, 23-year-old Anuj Bidve from Pune, who was studying at Lancaster University, was shot dead by an assailant. Hayer's body was recovered from a river running through Manchester. He had apparently drowned. A spokesman for Greater Manchester police said, "He was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no suspicious circumstances." He ruled out homicide but no cause of suicide was immediately available. Information about the discovery of Hayer's body was withheld until his parents formally identified the remains on Tuesday. Hayer had travelled from Birmingham to Manchester on December 31 to celebrate New Year's eve. He stayed with friends there. He went out again with friends on the night of the night of January 1 and was seen leaving Sankeys on his own around 2.15 am on January 2. Hayer was last seen by a taxi driver who dropped him within minutes of picking him up. The cabbie was located and questioned but the cops could not procure any more detail.
