'Chinese terror' alert for Dalai Lama

MUMBAI: The Mumbai police have received an intelligence input saying Chinese terrorists may try to target Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, after illegally entering India. According to the input, which has left security agencies baffled and a copy of which is available with TOI, a Chinese of Tibetan origin-Tashi Phuntsok-is likely to sneak into India with the suspected intention of gathering intelligence on the Tibetan administration as well as causing harm to the Dalai Lama. The input further states that six Chinese nationals of Tibetan origin, including Phuntsok-probably secret service agents of China-are likely to enter India illegally and carry out an attack on the Dalai Lama. A good number of Chinese youth enter India on business visas, but their real purpose is to carry out clandestine activities, says the intelligence report. "It is likely that they may try to visit prohibited areas such as Tibetan camps. The Dalai Lama keeps visiting Mumbai and other places in Maharashtra. The threat to the Dalai Lama need not be underestimated. Loss of a Chinese passport and recovery of unknown Chinese passports need to be reported promptly, so that the agencies concerned could question them thoroughly. In this regard, the activities of the followers of the Shugden cult (anti-Dalai Lama group) need to be kept under strict vigil," the report adds. The city cops have informed various Tibetan organizations about the matter and directed the special branch and local police stations to keep senior officials updated on the Dalai Lama's visits to the city. "The Dalai Lama often comes to Mumbai and even goes to slum areas. We will have to enhance security cover during his tour to Mumbai," an official said.
