Indian origin Sydney surgeon sentenced for prostitute's fatal drug overdose

SYDNEY: An Indian origin surgeon, Suresh Nair, has been sentenced to a minimum of five years and three months in prison after being convicted on charges of gross negligence leading to the death of a prostitute from a cocaine overdose in his flat.
Nair had supplied cocaine to Sullen Domingues-Zaupa, 22, who consequently died of drug overdose on November 21, 2009, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.
New South Wales District Court said Nair was grossly negligent as he failed to offer help or call for an ambulance when Zaupa was struggling to death due to drug overdose.
The court said Nair had also ingested a large amount of the drug, as a consequence of which, he was unable to help Zaupa.
Nair also pleaded guilty to supplying cocaine to another prostitute, Victoria McIntyre, 23, who died at his flat in February 2009.
Nair's original sentence of 10 years imprisonment was reduced to five years and three months because of his early guilty plea, his remorse and contrition, and the serious assault he suffered in Silverwater prison.
