Mixed response for Maoist bandh in AOB

VISAKHAPATNAM: The first day of the two-day bandh observed by Maoists in protest against the alleged encounter killing of top leader Kishenji was partial in some parts and total in other parts of the Andhra Orissa Border(AOB) on Sunday. Life was normal in most of the areas, apart from Maoist strongholds in the Agency of the north coastal districts and East Godavari, while it was successful in Koraput and Malkangiri districts in Orissa. Except one incident at Malkangiri district, the remaining parts of the AOB were peaceful. The rebels blasted an underconstruction school building at Salem of Mattili block in Malkangiri district in the wee hours of Sunday. The building is being constructed with ITDA funds of Rs 20 lakh. They left leaflets urging people to observe bandh in protest against the killing. All the weekly markets in the Agency areas- Chitrakonda, Malkangiri and Orkel of Malkangiri, Narayanapatna in Koraput of Odisha, Rajendrapalem of Koyyuru and Seeleru in G K Veedhi of Visakhapatnam were not operational on Sunday as the road transport authorities cancelled services worrying Maoist attacks. All the bus services from Visakha, Vizianagaram, Srikakulam and East Godavari to Odisha were cancelled, besides the interior services and the night halt services in the north coastal districts region. Police intensified combing operations in Neelakanthapuram, Kurupam, Gummalakshmipuram, Pachipenta, and Komarada mandals in Viziangaram, Bhamini, Battili, and Modemkal in Srikakulam, GK Veedhi, Chintapalli, Koyyuru, G.Madugula, Pedabayalu, Munchigput, Hukumpeta and other mandals in Visakha district Agency areas.
