Makar Sankranti is a major harvest festival celebrated in various parts of India. According to Hindu calendar, it marks the end of an inauspicious phase which begins around mid-December. Scientifically, January 14 marks the beginning of warmer and longer days compared to the nights. Priests hold traditional lamps as they perform evening 'Aarti' at Ganga Sagar in West Bengal on the eve of Makar Sankranti. (Sourcr:REUTERS )
