HOSHIARPUR: A Sikh youth from Punjab was killed while saving a French girl from thieves in the Paris Metro, an incident which saw the French media and the people hailing him as a hero. 27-year-old Rajinder Singh alias Babbu, a native of Dumana village here, went to Paris to earn livelihood about seven years ago and was working in a restaurant in Balini city, family members said. On October two, when Singh was returning home after duty he noticed a man trying to snatch a purse from a woman on a metro train. Singh tried to intervene but was beaten up and pushed off the moving train by the man and his three accomplices.
He fell on the tracks and was rushed to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to injuries the same day.
Gloom descended on the family and the village when the news of Singh's death poured in here. Balwinder Singh and Kulwant Kaur, the shattered parents, also felt proud about their son's heroic act. Commissioner (Jalandhar Division) Anurag Sharma along with Deputy Commissioner (Hoshiarpur) Dipinder Singh and other officials went to Singh's residence to condole his death. "I was waiting to marry my son on his arrival but the fate willed otherwise," Kulwant Kaur said. The officers assured the family that they would help in bringing back the body of Singh. They also assured to construct a gate at the entry point of village Dumana in memory of the youth. Punjab NRI Affairs Minister Balbir Singh Bath said Punjab is proud of Rajinder Singh and his family would be honoured.
