Two Indians gunned down in Philippines

Davao City (Philippines), November 16: Two Indian moneylenders were fatally shot in southern Philippines as they were about to leave a trading firm, police said.Manjeet Singh, 27, and Sukhinder Singh, 26, who were residents of Compostela Valley province, died from gunshot wounds after being attacked at Poblacion village in Agusan del Sur province Tuesday, said Superintendent Martin Gamba, spokesperson of the Caraga regional police office.The victims were about to leave the premises of a rice trading firm when the assailant fired at them several times with a handgun, Xinhua reported.The suspect fled on a motorcycle driven by an accomplice.The Indians were taken to the Bunawan District Hospital but were pronounced dead on arrival, philstar.com quoted the police as saying.As many as five spent shells from a .45 pistol were recovered.The attack took place in an area which is a known stronghold of the communist New People’s Army rebels, said mindanaoexaminer.comPolice are trying to determine the motive behind their killing and are probing whether the attack was connected to the victims’ money lending business or extortion by rebels.The media report said that Indian moneylenders in the southern Philippines have been the subject of numerous complaints due to the high interests they usually charge.Many customers are small time traders and private employees who rely solely on it.
 
Three Indians, including two brothers, murdered in Philippines
Hoshiarpur (Punjab): Two Indians were shot dead in Philippines capital Manila on Tuesday by some unknown assailants. Last Saturday, a youth from Moga district of Punjab was also killed in the capital.At around 6 am on Tuesday, two brothers from Panam village, 45 km from Hoshiarpur in Punjab -- Manjeet Singh, 28, and Sukhvinder Singh, 26, -- were shot dead by unknown assailants.Both brothers were going to their office on their bike on Tuesday morning at Indian local time 6am when the unknown assailants interrupted them on their way and fired at point blank range killing the two on the spot.The Panam villagers were shocked by the report. Their father Darshan Singh, mother Surjeet Kaur and sister Rajwinder Kaur said that Manjeet went to Manila six years back.  After four years he established himself there and called his brother Sukhwinder also.The family also said that Manjeet came to their village only six months back. "Our family had fixed the marriage of Manjeet and the date was to be finalised in January 2012. In the mid of all this, we got the disheartening news," said Darshan Singh.   Lakhvir Singh of Safuala village in Moga district was killed in Manila on Saturday. He had gone there searching job for himself.
