NRI shops looted for jewellery in UK

London, Sept 30 (PTI) Jewellery worth nearly 90,000 pounds has been stolen in two daring robberies in shops owned by Indian-origin entrepreneurs in Manchester and Leicester by distracting the staff and carrying out the heists. In Leicester, two Romanian women have been jailed for a cunning 54,000 pounds theft in Sunny Jewellers, owned by Sandeep Kanda, 29. The two women's activities were captured on CCTV that led to their arrest and sentencing. The CCTV camera captured the moment quick-fingered Saina Sava deftly slipped a large tray of gold bangles into a thief's pouch built into her skirt. She reached over the counter while accomplice Sedra Niculescu and another woman distracted the shop assistant. Within minutes, they made off in a luxury car, reports from Leicester said. At the Leicester Crown Court, Sava and Niculescu, who travelled to Leicester from Luton to commit the offence, were each jailed for 16 months. Judge Robert Brown told the defendants: You were part of a gang targeting this premises. You went equipped with skirts with long slits with deep pockets to hide the stolen goods in. It was pre-meditated. None of the jewellery was recovered. After the sentencing, Sundeep Kanda said he was delighted the women had been jailed. He said: It sends a message out that you can't get away with doing stuff like this.I'm glad they will be off the streets for a while and I think all the jewellers will be pleased because these two won't be able to steal from them. Meanwhile, in Stockport, near Manchester, a gang is being hunted by police after crooks distracted a shopkeeper and stole jewellery worth 35,000 pounds from her flat above the supermarket. Three men and four women went into the Gigi supermarket and distracted Mita Patel, 39, so that two female accomplices could sneak upstairs. The women broke into a safe and stole an expensive watch and dozens of rings, bangles, necklaces including some that were set with rubies and diamonds along with seven gold Canadian coins. Reports from Manchester said that the women then fled carrying gold weighing as much as a bag of potatoes. Mita, whose parents Charlie and Bhanu Patel have run the shop for 28 years, released pictures and CCTV footage in a bid to help police catch the gang. The jewellery included dowry for Mita's younger sister, Gigi, the report said. Mita said: So many of them came into the shop. They kept me distracted by moving around and repeatedly asking me questions. Then two women went upstairs. I couldn't even see them. I want to warn other businesses to watch out for these people.
