New Delhi, Sep 18 (PTI) As many as 49 Indian handicraft companies will participate in the four-day-long 'Asia's Fashion Jewellery & Accessories Fair' that begins tomorrow in Hong Kong. The Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH) has made arrangements for the participation of 49 Indian handicraft exporters -- showcasing products ranging from shawls to bags -- at the event being held from September 19-22 in Hong Kong, the EPCH said in a statement today. Excluding Hong Kong and mainland China, the top 10 countries and regions taking part in the event are India, the US, Taiwan, Japan, Australia, the United Kingdom, Korea, Thailand, Germany and Italy, it said. A total of 370 exhibitors from 17 countries and regions will display the best of their wares to buyers from across the globe. After detailed analysis and survey of the trade shows of Hong Kong, the council has decided to participate on a regular and annual basis in these trade fairs, covering the entire range of the handicrafts sector of India, EPCH Executive Director Rakesh Kumar said.
The wide range of products showcased by Indian exhibitors will include artificial fashion jewellery and accessories, scarves, bags, shawls, bangles, embroidered art, costume and imitation jewellery, beads, earrings, cuff, glass beads, cotton, jute and denim fashion bags, among other things. Handicrafts occupy an important place in the Indian economy and society. This product group is a large foreign exchange earner, an employment generator for economically and socially backward classes and a promoter of Indian ethnic and cultural heritage worldwide, Kumar added. The EPCH is a nodal body for promotion of Indian handicrafts under the aegis of the Development Commissioner for Handicrafts (Ministry of Textiles).
