Journalist Vora chargesheeted in Jyotirmoy’s murder case

MUMBAI, February23 2012: A senior woman journalist was on Tuesday chargesheeted by the Mumbai police under the tough provisions of the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), for her alleged role in the killing of Jyotirmoy Dey, a crime reporter, last year.Jigna Vora, the deputy bureau chief of Asian Age — who had been arrested on November 25 — was formally charge-sheeted under MCOCA for having supplied the licence plate number of Dey’s motorcycle and his address to underworld don Chhota Rajan, who allegedly executed the killing. Vora was also charged under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code and the Arms Act including murder, criminal conspiracy and destruction of evidence. The crime branch filed the supplementary charge-sheet in the court, which extended the custody of all the accused up to March 12. In the initial charge-sheet filed on December 3, the crime branch accused a dozen people, including Rajan — suspected to be living in South East Asia — of being involved in the murder of Dey. Rajan allegedly paid Rs500,000 to Satish Kalya, a contract killer — who was also arrested — to eliminate Dey. Police suspect professional rivalry led Vora to share details relating to Dey with Rajan. According to the police, Vora had spoken to Rajan over the phone on a few occasions. Rajan is known to call up crime reporters frequently, giving his point of view. Dey, who was a senior journalist covering crime with the city’s leading tabloid, Mid-Day, was shot dead on June 11 as he was returning to his suburban home in Powai.
