Inmates too can have video conference

 Karachi,February18 2012: Karachi Central Jail’s inmates from Thursday started to enjoy contacts with their near and dear ones as well as those who are either living outside the city or even abroad through video conference facility.The facility provided for the first time in any prison of the country was allowed by the Sindh government without providing any funds. Inmates would also be allowed to have video conference with their lawyers on request. According to Karachi Central Jail, one of the largest in the country, the money for this facility would be provided by the Prison management through donations. On the first day 12 prisoners including two foreigners availed the facility and were allowed to talk to their loved ones for a maximum of 20 minutes each and the numbers would increase in coming days and months. “The facility will be available especially to those inmates whose relatives cannot visit due to illness or living abroad,” prison official Nusrat Manghan told newsmen. To avoid the facility being misused by the inmates or the person on the other side of the video conference the prison authorities will maintain a watch by introducing a monitoring system.
