Go-slow, faulty radar behind flight delay

KARACHI, February14 2012: Industrial action resorted to by air traffic controllers and non-functioning of the important Pasni Radar have seriously disrupted domestic and international flights with passengers experiencing long delays. In view of a ‘Go-slow’ being observed by air traffic controllers foreign and local airlines are not only suffering financial losses due to non availability of shorter routes, they also fear the possibility of an air disaster if the present situation persists. Pasni Radar developed fault seven days ago and so far the country’s aviation regulators, Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), has failed to rectify the fault. CAA, however, on Monday claimed the Pasni Radar has started functioning, but according to air traffic controllers the radar was still spotting wrong direction of the aircraft which increases the chances of mid air accidents. Pasni Radar has been declared unserviceable by the Karachi Air Traffic Control. The radar provides service to flights entering Pakistan airspace from Pasni area in Balochistan. Due to the non-functioning of this radar, in the last 24 hours many flights were delayed.
