Parents upset as Gems schools increase fees

Dubai,19Jan,2012: Many parents of pupils studying in the Gems-run Indian schools are upset at the decision of the education provider to increase the fees by 10 per cent from the next academic year 2012/13. The Education Ministry in May 2010 has granted its approval to the schools' management for the increase in fees for three academic years. Thousands of families are affected by the decision as all Gems schools offering the Indian CBSE curriculum in Dubai, Fujairah and Sharjah are increasing their fees. At the Our Own English High School Sharjah, the average increase is Dh60.50 per month for Grades 1 to 4 and the maximum is Dh96.80 in Grades 10 to 12, according to a circular sent out to the parents. For Grade 1 the fees for the current year 2011-2012 is Dh6,050 and the proposed fee for the next year 2012-2013 is Dh6,655. For grade 12, the fees have been increased from Dh9,680 to Dh10,648.
