Kuwait does not need more foreign workers, official says

Manama,19Jan,2012: Kuwait's labour market does not need more foreign workers, a senior official has said. "The commitment to boost the rate of Kuwaiti nationals in the labour market from 31 per cent to 34 per cent by 2014 will end the need for foreigners," Mohammad Al Kindari, the labour and social affairs assistant undersecretary, said. Kuwaiti authorities have been pushing for reforms of the labour market that will reduce dependency on foreigners who make up around two thirds of the total population of 3.3 million. Most of the expatriates are unskilled labourers, mainly from Asia, working in the construction sectorThe reforms include boosting the percentage of Kuwaiti nationals who join the market annually. Al Kindi said that the ministry would soon allow the transfer of commercial visit visas to work permits, but only within government contracts, Kuwaiti daily Al Rai reported on Tuesday. The move will be discussed by the government after its formation following the election of a new parliament on February 2.
