Kolkata celebrates Chinese New Year

Kolkata, Jan 24: Students from China hummed a Hindi movie song while Indian students returned the compliment by rendering a popular Chinese number as expatriates from that country welcomed the Chinese New Year amid much fanfare here. The Chinese Consul General in Kolkata Zhang Lizhong Friday night wished all a happy New Year and said relations between the two countries have been and will continue to grow stronger. “This year is the Year of the Dragon. Our ties with India have steadily grown and we are sincerely committed towards strengthening the ties further,” Zhang said. Seven Chinese students studying in the St. Xaviers College sang “Suraj Ki Baahon Mein” from the movie “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara” while Indian students from the School of Chinese language rendered the “Real Heroes” originally sung by action superstar Jackie Chan as the crowd of over 200 Chinese expatriates clapped merrily.
“India and especially Kolkata is so full of life. The Chinese song by the Indian students made the night a memorable one,” said Chinese tourist Mobei. Chinese dragon dance and a kung fu show were also part of the event as people enjoyed the cultural extravaganza with authentic Chinese and Indian food on the menu.
“This Year of Dragon is auspicious for us. Dragon is one of the 12 Chinese gods and is a symbol of strength,” said Cheng who owns an eatery at the city’s famed China Town. Among the Chinese and a few Indian faces were two people from Paris who are on a visit to the metropolis. “You don’t get many chances to witness the culture of India and China on the same stage. Kolkata is so full of life and vibrant. We are lucky to have come here,” said Herge and Nicolle who along with their Chinese friend had come to witness the occasion.
