Indian-American billionaire Raj Rajaratnam seeks delay of his 11-year jail term

New York, December 2: Lawyers of billionaire Indian American hedge fund boss Raj Rajaratnam have sought a delay of his 11-year prison sentence in connection with a insider trading case, by asking a US court to let him be free on bail while he appeals for his conviction.Rajaratnam lawyer Patricia Millett argued just five days before he was about to begin his prison sentence, that there was a substantial question of law on appeal that entitles him to bail because he’s not a flight risk. A three-judge panel of the 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals in New York did not immediately rule on his request, the New York Post reports. The judges heard arguments over whether Rajaratnam should be released on bail pending appeal of his criminal conviction. Meanwhile, a prosecutor argued that there was no substantial question of law and said he should go to prison. The 54-year-old Galleon Group founder was sentenced in October for illegally netting 72 million dollars through his trades. He is now scheduled to report to prison on Monday.
