Kavita Singh is the daughter-in-law of JDU legislator Jagmato Dev, whose death necessitated the bypoll. Nine candidates were in the fray for the byelections held on October 13. It was the second bypoll after the Nitish Kumar-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) returned to power last year. In first bypoll in June, JDU ally Bharatiya Janata Party ( BJP) won the Purnea seat.

Hyderabad, Oct 17 (IBNS) Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) candidate Srinivas Reddy on Monday won the by-election to the Banswada Assembly constituency in Nizamabad district by a landslide margin. Reddy, who fought from the party that is spearheading a separate Telangana state, defeated his nearest Congress candidate Sangem Srinivas Goud by nearly 50,000 votes polling a total of 83,845. Goud got 33,356 votes. Reddy had won the seat in 2009 as a Telugu Desam Party (TDP) candidate. He later joined the TRS. TDP had not fielded any candidate this time for the seat. The seat Reddy won falls in Nizamabad which is part of the ten districts comprising the Telangana region. The Telangana region comprise Adilabad, Hyderabad, Khammam, Karimnagar, Mahbubnagar, Medak, Nalgonda, Nizamabad, Rangareddy, and Warangal districts.
