Olesia Stefanko, Miss Ukraine, was the runner-up. Miss Brazil Priscila Machado came in third. Miss Philippines Shamcey Supsup and Miss China Luo Zilin rounded out the top five finalists.
Lopes edged out 88 other competitors to win the 60th annual title.
Lopes was handed the crown from Mexico's Ximena Navarrete, winner of the 2010 Miss Universe pageant.
More than 1 billion people were expected to have watched the event.
Under pageant rules, the contestants must never have been married or had children. They must be at least 18 years of age and under 27 years of age by Feb. 1 of the competition year.
The pageant was hosted by NBC "Today" news anchor Natalie Morales and the Bravo network's Andy Cohen. The contest is co-owned by developer and TV personality Donald Trump and NBC.Judging the dozens of international contestants were veteran TV news reporter Connie Chung, supermodel Isabeli Fontana and race car driver Helio Castroneves.
The Miss Universe pageant started as a local bathing revue in Long Beach, California, organized by a swimwear company.
