BEIJING: Beijing's postal system has stepped in to counter the rising divorce rate in the Chinese capital. All that a lover or spouse needs to do is buy one of the special envelopes brought out by Beijing Post, and send a love letter. The post office will hold the letter for seven years before delivering it to the loved one for whom it was meant.
The idea is to remind the recipients of the promises made and vows taken in the first flush of love and marital joy. Seven years later, those words in the letter might taken on a special meaning and deepen the feelings between the two, the post office feels.
"Eyes tend to wander after seven years of relationship in some cases. That is the time when the love letters can save marriages from breaking," a post office official said.
Divorce-rates in Beijing have nearly doubled from 11,582 in 2004 to 21,013 in 2010. Beijing Post is hoping to do its bit to counter this trend. It is selling envelops with a specially designed post mark showing two lovers while offering to store them for seven years.
