JALANDHAR: The Milpitas city police in California, US, has started investigation into the threats to life received by North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) president Satnam Singh Chahal, who had raised the issues of maltreatment of Punjabis in the Indian consulate general office in San Francisco and the alleged corruption prevailing there.
The Milpitas police have already registered a case after Satnam complained of threats over the phone. Chahal and his team during their visit to Punjab last winters had raised the issues concerning Punjabis in the Indian consulate office and with the Indian government.
The NAPA president told TOI that he recently received a handwritten hate letter via postal mail threatening his life, after which he had given a complaint to the police authorities. Giving further details, he said the letter warned him to stay away from the issues and concerns of Indian consulate general at San Francisco.
"This letter which was personally addressed to me further explicitly states that in the event of non-compliance, I will have to meet the dire consequences. The letter was written with red ink in both Punjabi and English languages using indecent and derogatory language. Since the letter is written partly in Punjabi script, it is imperative that the author of this criminal act is from Punjabi community in the US or India," said Satnam.
He said, he had been receiving threatening calls, while in Punjab in January last when he and association chairman Dalwinder Singh Dhoot were raising the issue of cops and politicians grabbing NRI properties and that of the maltreatment to Punjabis in consulate.
He said that while the consular officials were apparently peeved at the raising of issues by the NAPA, but the letter could be the handiwork of some unscrupulous elements.
