Indian teen held in US for saving mother

NEW YORK: A 17-year-old Indian-American youth was handcuffed and arrested by police when he went to the rescue of his mother who was harassed and spit on her face by a Chinese national in Flushing area of Queens.
This is the second incident of an Indian youth being arrested in Flushing after the detention of Krittika Biswas, 18, daughter of Debashish Biswas, vice consul of Indian Consulate, following a complaint from her school teachers that she had sent a hate email, actually sent by another student.
The fresh incident took place on Saturday when a Chinese pedestrian stood in front of the car of the woman, driving on Kissena Boulevard-Beach Avenue intersection, and refused to move even after the green traffic light flashed, says Sushma Thukral, owner of Asian Foods at Cherry Avenue in Flushing, a pre-dominantly Chinese locality. Sushma waited for a few minutes and honked to signal that she should move. Unfazed, the Chinese man allegedly came near the driver seat, spat on her face and abused her. Sorab Thukral, 17, sitting beside his mother, got down from the car after she pulled the vehicle off the sidewalk near her store. Police arrested the Chinese pedestrian, they also took Sorab into custody on the complaint that he attempted to hit the pedestrian with an iron rod.
